Stand Firm - Monday, April 23rd, 2007

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:10-12

Well, I am not sure where to start. This morning I woke up in a complete sweat. Last night was powerful. It was real. It was sincere. The Spirit was present. No person could have orchestrated what we witnessed and we are apart of last night. Allow me to explain…

First of all, our time of worship through singing was authentic and genuine. It was beautiful to hear the voices in one accord. Then we addressed 8 major strongholds Satan has within the city of Dallas. A speaker from last Thursday studied and addressed these issues for 4 years, so I felt it a necessity to, by the power of the blood of Jesus Christ to address these strongholds. Therefore, on behalf of the church in Dallas, 8 pastors came forward and repented of these sins. It was powerful. Then we were led into a time of communion. What an image…the many members coming together and taking part as ONE body. The Holy Spirit was in our midst. And as the speaker said to me before the message, “The air is pregnant.” I knew exactly what he meant. It might be a strange saying, yet the truth was announced. The Holy Spirit was present INSIDE THE TENT. Something powerful was too come…to be unleashed. And man, did the Holy Spirit come.

After the message, our speaker invited us into a time of prayer. People were being prayed for that needed to be refreshed in the relationship with the Lord. People were being prayed for that needed to be encouraged in life. People were being prayed for if they wanted healing and relief from physical pain. People were being prayed for that needed to be released from the bondage of sin. It was quite a time of prayer. It went on for approximately 2 ½ hours. At times, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The Lord was working in people’s lives. The Lord was convicting people of their “old” lifestyle. The Lord was freeing people from their chains. God was present.

At the same time, I was out of my comfort zone. At times, I didn’t have answers for some that had questions. In fact, I was even a little uncomfortable at times. But I knew as the speaker said, the “air felt pregnant” that last night. You see, towards the end of the service a homeless man came to the forefront. He had been coming on a regular basis. But he always comes drunk and/or high. Up to this point, he had been creating quite a stir with his noise and disrespect. So I grew uneasy when I saw him sitting up front again. But this time, I knew he was there for a reason.

And as people continued to pray throughout the night, two individuals went over to pray for him. He raised his hand and asked for prayer. Then as the night went on, more individuals continued to surround him in prayer. To the point where there were at least 25 people surrounding him in prayer. Something was occurring. Something that I had ever experienced in my life. This time went on for a couple of hours. This was a battle as Paul wrote, “Not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” You see, this man was possessed. Please don’t read that sentence lightly. Because I don’t write it lightly. It was quite serious. How do I know that he was possessed? Because I heard the demon identify his name through this man. Yeah, I know some of you are like, “What in the world are you talking about?” Look, all I know is what I saw and heard. It was real. Take for example in the Gospel of Mark. It author writes, “When He (Jesus) got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him…Constantly, night and day, he (the man with the unclean spirit) was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he said, ‘What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me! For He had been saying to him, ‘Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And He was asking him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said to Him, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’”

(Remember I come from a very conservative background.) But I want each of you to know something. This situation wasn’t conjured up by people from the same congregation or ministry. It was a spiritual confrontation between the power and authority of Jesus Christ (who praise be to God has already WON the victory) and the demons inside this man. And thankfully the Lord used the body of Christ (as a UNIFIED body from various congregations) to go before the throne and battle on behalf of this man who was possessed. The disciples went through these very issues in the first century.

Looking back though, we would handle this situation a bit differently. (However not because things were handled in an unbiblical manner but more because it doesn’t need to be the centerpiece of the tent-revival.) But hey, you don’t learn these things until you experience the situation and learn from them. Therefore, from now on we will attempt to have two small tents placed outside the TENT where this can occur again if the Lord so leads. And we will have a small group of individuals who are trained and equipped to handle such serious matters. It is not meant for people who are simply curious and want to observe. This isn’t meant to be a spectacle. It is not to be taken lightly. Because I believe that the Lord can work through His people like He did in the Bible. It might make me uneasy at first, but that is because I didn’t ever grow up seeing such things. But as someone said in the prayer time this morning, the Lord is beginning to transform His people and open our eyes to the Lord working.

Last night was a night I will never forget. The Spirit was present and moving. Not because of certain, specific situations but because of the Spirit’s presence in those that were present. I am so thankful for what unfolded on night fourteen. Lives were touched, whether it was someone who recommitted their life to Jesus, or someone who stepped up and said they would pay for someone’s dentist bill, or they decided to turn to Jesus for the first time ever for freedom…God was and continues to work through His people. What a blessing.
